9 MILES!

Actually, it was closer to 10, but the big deal is that I did it in 1 hour and 20 minutes…my legs can really feel it this evening. I was reading an article the other day in Runner’s World magazine and it said that 90% of the run is totally in your mind! I can believe that! Really! My mindset makes all the difference. My playlist is loaded with mostly 70’s, 80’s and Amazing Worship music. It’s kind of astounding how much difference music makes to my runs. For those of you who run in the complete silence, just listening to yourself breath…try music sometime; it makes the run take on a whole new dimension. There’s a song by Hillsong (church in Australia) called “Kingdom Come”. It is a song that I could run 100 miles to…well…maybe not 100!

“It’s not really THAT far!”

Today is Saturday and it has been a looooong week! I’m looking forward to traveling to the Mountains of North Carolina this next week…good, cool, long runs! Yeah! My running/training is still well on track. I added a couple of longer “aerobic” workouts with light weights this week…the change was good. The first race for me is coming in about 4 weeks now; I’m a little nervous. I have been running the course about once a week since I live there! There are many bridges and hills in downtown Wilmington so the legs have to work quite hard! It’s all good, though! I now have quite a lot of friends who check out the blog and stay in touch with the training…13.1 miles…it’s really not THAT far!

No Worries!

As I was putting in 8 miles of good roadrunning this morning, the Lord spoke to me and said, “Do you know that people are the only ones of My creation that worries?” Wow! After the last 2 weeks of financial turmoil, I felt God telling me to turn it over to Him…again; and to know that He isn’t wringing His hands wondering what to do…He is absolutely RULING AND REIGNING!! That gave me great peace as I ran. I also recruited a friend of mine, CB Johnson, to run in the half with me. He is a Naval Academy grad and has probably never truly been out of shape! Way to go, CB! November 9 will be here before we know it! No Worries!

When Training Becomes a Yawn

I’m finding it harder and harder to stay “up” about my training; my days as a mom, school volunteer, and job are squeezing out most of my energy! I am continuing on with my runs, trying to get ready for the first half marathon which is around the first of November. I’m sure it is normal to go through ups/downs and time crunches. I will press on and finish well! I think I need to start making much better food choices; much less sugar! (Did I mention how much I loooooove sugar?) Wake up!

White Sandy Shores!

This week I was in beautiful Destin, Florida! My husband, who is a pastor, and I join about 6 other pastors/wives couples 3 or 4 times a year for trips like these…we call it the REAL Gathering! It was awesome! Training continued the whole time…except along the white sandy shores of the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico! It is so beautiful there! It looks like every inch of Destin is landscaped. The best part of the week was that on Tuesday the humidity dropped and training gets much easier on long run days without high humidity hanging over you. All in all a great week on a lot of fronts! This week, it’s back to Wilmington…oh well, someone’s gotta do it!

Just Keep Running…

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning here in Wilmington, NC. I am heading out momentarily for an easy run. I will be traveling some this week, so it always helps to get a run in when I can! This week was especially hard with my friend Kim’s funeral. Thank you to those of you who commented. It is so comforting to know that others are extending their thoughts and prayers during times like these. Kim’s funeral was a beautiful celebration of her life. She was truly “pure in heart” and will most definitely “see the Lord”! I kept my training right on track; Kim would be proud! I added some pretty good leg work…it was hard, but I know it will pay off at race time! Just keep running….Just keep running….

In Memory of Kim

Yesterday a sweet friend of mine committed suicide. It has totally rocked my world! She was a fellow runner; a great runner! This is the scripture that comes to mind when I think of Kim and her love for the Lord Jesus and for the sport of roadrunning:
Philippians 3:12-14
“Not that I have attained (this ideal) or have already been made perfect, but I press on to lay hold of (grasp) and make my own, that for which Christ Jesus (the Messiah) has laid hold of me and made me His own. I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own (yet); but one thing I do (it is my one aspiration): forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the (supreme and heavenly) prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.”
I will run for Kim. Christ’s strength will be enough for me.

Hurricane Hanna

Living on the coast of NC is interesting this time of year…hurricane season! This week was especially exciting as the whole city prepared to “hunker down” for Hurricane Hanna. I got in all my runs and workouts before the end of the week; it was hard, but I had to push myself to get it done. My long run should have been 9-10 miles and was more like 8. I hope I don’t die in the actual road race! The good thing about a storm like Hanna is that it takes all the bad, humid air out of the atmosphere and leaves it much easier to breath! Maybe a nice long run along Wrightsville Beach will be just what the Dr. ordered on Monday morning!!

Is 13.1 Doable?

I think it is!!! My week has gone well as far as training. Monday was hills again sandwiched in between 3 miles. I could tell this week I am getting stronger. Yesterday was 6 good miles. It was 93% humidity at the time; so it didn’t feel all that victorious or fun, but I made it! It took a little over an hour. I feel pretty good about my time/pace. I had blogged earlier about the guy who has attacked two women in our town who were jogging at the time. That is always in the back of my mind, but I change it up and try to keep to different routes. Wilmington is so beautiful this time of year! The humidity will drop soon as the hurricane/tropical storm fronts move on. I still need a good water plan for most of my runs; I’m still working on that! Tomorrow is Pilates with 9-10 miles on Saturday! Woo-hoo!!

Total Wash?

This last week was nothing like I had planned! I had planned strength training on Monday with an easy run, pilates/yoga mid-week, a 5 miler on Thursday, rest on Friday, long run on Saturday.  The strength training day happened and then…I could hardly walk the rest of the week!  It was the craziest thing!  By Saturday all I could muster was a 5 miler, easy run.  Thank goodness for clean slates and new weeks!  I actually had a general, overall bad feeling all week.  I couldn’t get myself feeling good and energetic.  Oh well, I will try again tomorrow.  By the way, my next strength training day will be MUCH changed!  I actually think I will run hills tomorrow and keep it simple!
