In Memory of Kim
Yesterday a sweet friend of mine committed suicide. It has totally rocked my world! She was a fellow runner; a great runner! This is the scripture that comes to mind when I think of Kim and her love for the Lord Jesus and for the sport of roadrunning:
Philippians 3:12-14
“Not that I have attained (this ideal) or have already been made perfect, but I press on to lay hold of (grasp) and make my own, that for which Christ Jesus (the Messiah) has laid hold of me and made me His own. I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own (yet); but one thing I do (it is my one aspiration): forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the (supreme and heavenly) prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.”
I will run for Kim. Christ’s strength will be enough for me.

Hurricane Hanna
Living on the coast of NC is interesting this time of year…hurricane season! This week was especially exciting as the whole city prepared to “hunker down” for Hurricane Hanna. I got in all my runs and workouts before the end of the week; it was hard, but I had to push myself to get it done. My long run should have been 9-10 miles and was more like 8. I hope I don’t die in the actual road race! The good thing about a storm like Hanna is that it takes all the bad, humid air out of the atmosphere and leaves it much easier to breath! Maybe a nice long run along Wrightsville Beach will be just what the Dr. ordered on Monday morning!!

Is 13.1 Doable?
I think it is!!! My week has gone well as far as training. Monday was hills again sandwiched in between 3 miles. I could tell this week I am getting stronger. Yesterday was 6 good miles. It was 93% humidity at the time; so it didn’t feel all that victorious or fun, but I made it! It took a little over an hour. I feel pretty good about my time/pace. I had blogged earlier about the guy who has attacked two women in our town who were jogging at the time. That is always in the back of my mind, but I change it up and try to keep to different routes. Wilmington is so beautiful this time of year! The humidity will drop soon as the hurricane/tropical storm fronts move on. I still need a good water plan for most of my runs; I’m still working on that! Tomorrow is Pilates with 9-10 miles on Saturday! Woo-hoo!!

Total Wash?
This last week was nothing like I had planned! I had planned strength training on Monday with an easy run, pilates/yoga mid-week, a 5 miler on Thursday, rest on Friday, long run on Saturday. The strength training day happened and then…I could hardly walk the rest of the week! It was the craziest thing! By Saturday all I could muster was a 5 miler, easy run. Thank goodness for clean slates and new weeks! I actually had a general, overall bad feeling all week. I couldn’t get myself feeling good and energetic. Oh well, I will try again tomorrow. By the way, my next strength training day will be MUCH changed! I actually think I will run hills tomorrow and keep it simple!

Wrightsville Beach!!
This morning’s run was a wonderful run at Wrightsville Beach near my home. It came on the heels of two of the sorest days of my life! I don’t know what I actually did on Monday to make myself so sore, but I hope it never happens again! I ran through the soreness and felt great afterward. It was a short run of maybe 3 miles, but I needed it after the week I’ve had. I have been discussing the “eating everything in sight factor” with my young 16 year old friend, Katherine Freshwater. She is a total athlete; very competitive; plays everything! We were both just saying that we never quite feel full. I was scarfing down a bowl of organic cereal and she was munching on a Luna bar! The long run is coming on Saturday!

Safety First
I’ve read and been told over and over that strength training is a must for a half…well, yesterday was strength training for me and today I am SORE! I would have thought I was past all this soreness! I did about 25 flights of stairs, squats and walking lunges plus some upper body work. Not my favorite; hope it helps! Tomorrow will be normal with 5 miles of running. I’m looking forward to it! There have been two attacks in my area on women jogging by the same man. He is still at large and it is a little troubling to me. I never run the same route twice and now I will add mace to necessities. It’s so sad to have to worry about stuff like that. If anyone has any advice about safety tips, I would appreciate it!

Water is vital!
Today was a nice, long 8.3 miles…all was well until about the 5th mile. Thank goodness I had my husband, Tim, drive the route and leave water for me at my sister in laws mailbox! After the water, at about the hour mark, I was ready to go again. Amazing! I actually picked it up and got an amazing second wind. I actually feel like I am becoming a “runner”. I have always admired runners who could endure long runs with focus, energy and discipline. It takes something deep within to make long runs happen. I’m hoping to take the runs a little longer each week. Maybe next week I’ll make it 9! I will need to add some more amazing tunes to my playlist!

Ahhhh! I’m Back!!!!
OK, so that was more like it! This morning was 6.3 miles in 60 minutes flat! Again, low humidity, low temp. I could run forever like that; well, maybe not FOREVER. I felt pretty good today after missing a couple of days. I went to purchase a camel belt for my snacks and water for longer runs; it was $40. Needless to say, I didn’t make the purchase. I will have to figure out something else. I haven”t been running long enough to actually need it yet. I think I need to go for much longer than an hour. This Saturday I’m going for 8/9 miles. That’s a looooong one for me. Hope I make it. Tomorrow is a rest day, so I’ll see you on Saturday!

Double-Stuffed Oreos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, yesterday I totally fell off the wagon! It was a wonderful rest day…and then I ate a whole row of double stuffed oreos!!!! The WHOLE ROW!!!!!! I thought that I would just work extra hard this morning at the 5:00 am hour and when I woke up, it was raining…sideways!!! I crawled back into bed and went back to sleep for another 2 glorious hours–workout skipped! I may actually work in a run later today, but probably not. Once a month I get the priviledge to head downtown to a facility called “Good Shepherd”. It supplies housing and food for the areas homeless. I will get to serve some of the residents this evening; it’s always a highlight of my week! I puts into perspective all the disappointments of workouts, weather or my own goals! Keep sweating!

Hills!
I’m about to head out and do a “hill” run/workout. I think I will sandwich my hillwork in between about 2 miles of easy running. It’s nice and cool in Wilmington this morning; 66 degrees! It has rained a little during the night which will make it a wonderful workout! Like I said last week, Mondays really set the mood for the rest of the week for me, so, rain or shine, I’m out the door. By the way, it’s 6:53! (My husband says he feels a “little peer pressure”; he went to see Journey last night in Raleigh, so he’s sleeping in. So much for peer pressure!)
